What should my health care professional know before I take oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®)?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•an alcohol abuse problem
•kidney disease
•allergic reaction to carbamazepine
•any unusual or allergic reaction to oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®) , other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding
How should I take this medicine?
Take oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®) tablets by mouth. Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®) tablets may be taken with or without food. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose (Trileptal®)?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
What drug(s) may interact with oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®)?
•alcohol
•carbamazepine
•felodipine
•female hormones, including birth control pills, injections, patches or implants
•fosphenytoin
•lamotrigine
•phenobarbital
•phenytoin
•primidone
•sevelamer
•valproic acid
•verapamil
Tell your doctor or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines and herbal products. Also tell your doctor or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What
side effects may I notice from taking oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®)?
Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional
as soon as possible:
•allergic reaction (fever, rash, muscle aches or pain, hives, or difficulty
breathing)
•confusion
•difficulty speaking or walking
•dizziness
•infection
•muscle in co-ordination
•nausea or vomiting
•redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the
mouth
•swelling of the legs and ankles
•unexplained tiredness
•unusual bruising or bleeding
•vision changes
•weakness
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your
doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•constipation
•diarrhea
•difficulty sleeping
•drowsiness
•headache
•loss of appetite
•nervousness
•stomach upset, indigestion
•tremor
What should
I watch for while taking oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®)?
Visit your docctor or health care professional for a regular check on your
progress. Do not stop taking oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®)suddenly. This
increases the risk of seizures. Wear a Medic Alert bracelet or necklace. Carry
an identification card with information about your condition, medications, and
doctor or health care professional. Rarely, serious skin allergic
reactions may occur with oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®). If you develop a
skin rash, redness, itching, peeling skin inside your mouth, swollen glands, or
a fever while taking oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®) , contact your health
care provider immediately.
You may get drowsy or dizzy when you first start taking this medicine. Do not
drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know
how oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®) affects you. Alcohol can
increase drowsiness and dizziness. Avoid alcoholic drinks. If you are
female and are taking birth control pills (contraceptive pills) or using other
hormonal birth control methods (like injections), you should know that the birth
control may not work as well while you are taking this drug. You may need to
talk to your doctor about effective ways to prevent pregnancy. Let your doctor
know if you experience any unusual menstrual-type bleeding or spotting or if you
think you might be pregnant while on this medicine. If you are going to
have surgery, tell your doctor or health care professional that you are taking
oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®).
Where
can I keep my medicine (Trileptal®) ?
Keep out of reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F).
Keep container tightly closed. Protect from light or moisture. Throw away any
unused medicine after the expiration date
