What are cabergoline tablets (Dostinex®)
?
Cabergoline (Dostinex®) is used to treat high levels of prolactin, a
hormone made by the body that affects such things as the menstrual cycle, breast
milk production, fertility, and sexual function. Cabergoline (Dostinex®)
also treats high levels of prolactin which occur with certain tumors such as
adenomas. This medication is sometimes used for the treatment of Parkinson's
disease or restless-legs syndrome. Generic cabergoline (Dostinex®)
tablets are not yet available.
What
should my health care professional know before I take cabergoline
(Dostinex®)?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•anxiety
•depression
•heart disease
•high or low blood pressure
•liver disease
•lung disease
•memory disorder
•schizophrenia
•an unusual or allergic reaction to cabergoline (Dostinex®) , other
medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding
How
should I take this medicine (Dostinex®)?
Take cabergoline (Dostinex®) tablets by mouth. Depending on your
illness, you may take as little as one pill twice per week to as much as one
pill daily. This medicine may be taken with or without food. Follow the
directions on the prescription label. Do not take your medicine more often than
directed. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding
the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What
if I miss a dose (Dostinex®)?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your
next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

side effects may I notice from taking cabergoline (Dostinex®)?
Side effects that you should report to your doctor as soon as possible:
•confusion
•nausea/vomiting
•shortness of breath, wheezing
•skin rash, skin lumps, or hives
•tingling or numbness in hands or feet
•weakness
Stop using cabergoline (Dostinex®) and call your doctor as soon as
you can if you get any of these side effects.
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your
doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•constipation
•diarrhea
•dizziness
•drowsiness
•dry mouth
•headache
•indigestion
•low blood pressure
•nervousness
•pain in stomach or abdomen
•pain with menstruation
•swelling in ankles
•tiredness
What should
I watch for while taking cabergoline (Dostinex®)?
If you are going to have surgery, tell your doctor or health care professional
that you are taking cabergoline (Dostinex®) . It may be helpful
to take cabergoline (Dostinex®) with food if you experience nausea,
stomach pain, or indigestion after taking it. If you experience dry mouth
while taking cabergoline (Dostinex®) , make sure to drink plenty of
water. It may also be helpful to suck on sugarless hard candy or crushed ice. If
your dry mouth is severe, ask your doctor about a saliva substitute.
Cabergoline (Dostinex®) can sometimes cause the blood pressure to
temporarily drop. This may happen suddenly causing dizziness or lightheadedness
if you try to stand up too quickly. Make sure to get up slowly from a lying or
sitting position while taking cabergoline (Dostinex®) . Cabergoline (Dostinex®)
may make you drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that
needs mental alertness until you know how cabergoline (Dostinex®)
affects you. Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking cabergoline (Dostinex®)
. Alcohol may add to side effects such as drowsiness or dizziness.
Where
can I keep my medicine (Dostinex®)?
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot
open. Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77
degrees F). Protect from light and moisture. Throw away any unused medicine
after the expiration date.
